This small island is often overlooked, but it hosts a spectacular array of scenery and a huge amount of challenging hikes and climbs. With vast icecaps dominating it’s centre, hot springs, rocky peaks and lush valleys, it is a unique place to take an adventurous journey.
You could choose to tackle it’s volcanic mountains, and feel like you’re climbing on a lunar landscape. The sand is an incredible spectrum of colours, and steam dances above the hot rivers in the valley below.
Have lunch with the puffins and gaze out at the icecaps whilst you stop for lunch. Or for those who want to explore even deeper, you can cross the icecap in a continuous 9 day cross country skiing expedition.
If you prefer your skiing steeper, then in the Northern mountains you can ski from summit to sea in the same day. For a really unique experience, join a yacht based exploratory ski expedition in the Westfjords, and tour inland each day in search of fresh lines.
